IslandStays blog | Travel advice for choosing the right island holiday

Choosing a Mauritius resort sounds simple enough. Find a beautiful beach, choose a hotel that looks appealing, compare a few prices and book your holiday.

But there is a little more to it than that.

Mauritius has a wonderful variety of resorts, from relaxed beachfront hotels and lively family-friendly properties to intimate luxury retreats where exceptional service and tranquillity take centre stage. Two resorts may look equally attractive online but offer very different holiday experiences.

The right choice depends on more than the photographs or the special offer. It is about finding a resort that suits your travel style, your budget, the people travelling with you and what you actually want from your time on the island.

At IslandStays, we believe that choosing the right resort is just as important as choosing the destination itself. Here are seven things worth considering before booking your next Mauritius holiday.

1. Choose the Right Part of Mauritius

Mauritius Island

Mauritius may be a relatively small island, but its different coastal regions each have their own character. Where you stay can influence your beach experience, the weather conditions you encounter and the activities available nearby.

  • The north: Popular for its beaches, restaurants, shops and easy access to local attractions. It suits travellers who enjoy having options beyond the resort.

  • The west: Known for beautiful sunsets, a generally sheltered coastline and opportunities for dolphin excursions and exploring the island. It can be particularly appealing to couples and families.

  • The east: Famous for its long, sweeping beaches and attractive turquoise lagoons. It offers a more spacious, tropical feel, although trade winds can be more noticeable at certain times of the year.

  • The south and south-west: Home to dramatic scenery, rugged coastlines and the striking Le Morne landscape. This region appeals to travellers looking for natural beauty, outdoor activities and a quieter setting.

These are general guidelines rather than hard-and-fast rules. Conditions vary by season and location, so consider your travel dates as well as the scenery.

Advisor tip: Before choosing a hotel, decide whether your ideal holiday involves exploring the island, enjoying a sheltered swimming beach, spending time outdoors or simply relaxing in a beautiful resort.

2. Match the Resort to Your Travel Style

Not every resort suits every traveller. A hotel that is perfect for a family with young children may not be the best choice for a couple seeking peace and privacy.

Consider what matters most to you.

  • Couples and honeymooners may prefer romantic settings, intimate dining experiences, spa facilities and a quieter atmosphere.

  • Families with children should look for suitable swimming areas, children's clubs, family rooms, connecting rooms and activities for different ages.

  • Active travellers may value watersports, snorkelling, tennis, fitness facilities, excursions and opportunities to explore beyond the resort.

  • Travellers seeking relaxation might prioritise beautiful beaches, attentive service, comfortable rooms, good restaurants and a peaceful setting.

It is also worth considering the atmosphere of the property. Some resorts are lively and sociable, while others are designed around privacy and understated luxury.

Neither is necessarily better. The important question is which environment will make your holiday feel like a real break.

3. Look Beyond the Beach Photographs

Those turquoise lagoons and white sandy beaches are a big part of Mauritius's appeal. However, not every resort offers the same beach experience.

Some have long stretches of sand ideal for morning walks, while others have smaller coves or beaches where swimming conditions vary with the tide, wind and season.

If the beach is central to your holiday, consider these questions:

  • Is the beach sandy and spacious, or relatively small?

  • Is the lagoon suitable for swimming, including for less confident swimmers?

  • Is snorkelling possible directly from the beach, or are boat trips needed?

  • Are motorised and non-motorised watersports available?

  • Is the beach generally sheltered during your travel dates?

Snorkelling deserves particular attention. A resort may advertise a beautiful lagoon without necessarily offering the best coral or marine life directly offshore.

Likewise, a spectacular beach does not automatically guarantee calm swimming conditions every day.

Advisor tip: Tell your travel advisor what you actually want to do at the beach. Swimming, snorkelling, watersports and long walks can lead to quite different resort recommendations.

4. Understand What Your Meal Plan Includes

Your meal plan can make a significant difference to both the cost and convenience of your holiday.

Mauritius resorts commonly offer several options:

  • Bed and breakfast: Breakfast is included, leaving you free to arrange other meals.

  • Half board: Usually breakfast and dinner are included.

  • Full board: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

  • All-inclusive: Typically includes meals, selected drinks and certain additional services or activities, depending on the resort.

The cheapest package is not necessarily the best value. If you enjoy cocktails by the pool, leisurely lunches and dining at the resort each evening, an all-inclusive package could make budgeting easier.

On the other hand, if you plan to explore the island, eat at local restaurants or spend much of the day on excursions, a different meal plan may suit you better.

Always check the details. Premium drinks, speciality restaurants, certain activities and excursions may cost extra, even at an all-inclusive resort.

Also consider the quality and variety of dining. If food is an important part of your holiday, compare restaurant choices, buffet options and the availability of alternative dining experiences.

Advisor tip: Compare the total holiday cost, not simply the accommodation price. A cheaper room with meals excluded may work out more expensive than a package with a more inclusive meal plan.

5. Check the Rooms and Facilities for Everyone Travelling

A resort can have wonderful restaurants, beautiful gardens and an impressive swimming pool, but the accommodation still needs to work for you.

For families, check whether the resort offers suitable family rooms, connecting rooms, children's facilities and age-appropriate activities. A kids' club that caters for toddlers may not offer the same appeal to teenagers.

For couples, room location can make a difference. You may prefer a quiet garden room, a sea-view suite or a beachfront room where the ocean is just a few steps away.

It is also worth checking:

  • Room size, bedding arrangements and bathroom facilities.

  • Whether the room accommodates your party comfortably.

  • Balcony or terrace availability.

  • Walking distances between rooms, restaurants, pools and the beach.

  • Accessibility requirements, if applicable.

Do not assume that all room categories at a resort provide the same experience. Two packages at the same hotel can differ considerably depending on the room type and location.

Advisor tip: Choose your room based on how you intend to use it. Families may value space and convenience, while couples might prioritise privacy, views and a special setting.

6. Consider the Season, Weather and Length of Stay

Mauritius is a year-round destination, but conditions change throughout the year.

May to October is generally cooler and drier, while November to April tends to be warmer and more humid. Tropical rainfall and occasional cyclones are considerations during the warmer months.

Coastal conditions also vary. The east coast can be breezier at certain times of year, while western and northern locations may offer more sheltered conditions in particular seasons.

Think about your priorities when choosing your dates. Are you looking for hot summer weather, comfortable temperatures for exploring, or a relaxing beach holiday with plenty of swimming?

Your departure city, flight schedules, school holidays and budget may also influence the best dates for you.

For a longer stay, you might be willing to pay more for a resort with a wider choice of restaurants and activities. For a shorter break, a convenient location and an excellent beach may matter more.

Advisor tip: If your dates are flexible, compare a few travel periods. Sometimes shifting your holiday by a week or two can open up better-value packages or a wider choice of resorts.

7. Compare the Complete Package, Not Just the Price

Finally, make sure you compare like with like.

One Mauritius package may appear cheaper because it includes a different room category, fewer meals or different flights. Another may include transfers, baggage and a more comprehensive meal plan.

Before deciding, check:

  • Return flights and departure times.

  • Checked baggage and applicable airline charges.

  • Airport transfers.

  • Accommodation and room category.

  • Meal plan and drinks inclusions.

  • Resort facilities and any additional charges.

  • Booking conditions, payment terms and cancellation policies.

Also consider what matters most to you personally. Paying a little more for the right beach, better accommodation or a resort that suits your family can be money well spent.

Equally, the most expensive resort is not automatically the best choice. A well-matched mid-range property may deliver a far more satisfying holiday than a luxury hotel that does not suit your needs.

Advisor tip: Ask for help comparing two or three suitable resorts side by side. A focused comparison is often more useful than browsing dozens of properties without knowing which differences really matter.
