Half Board, Full Board or All-Inclusive? What Mauritius Holiday Packages Really Include

Choosing the right meal plan is one of the most important decisions when comparing Mauritius holiday packages. Two resorts may appear to offer similar accommodation at very different prices, but the difference could come down to meals, drinks, snacks and what you will actually pay for once you arrive.

Should you choose half board, full board or all-inclusive? Is an all-inclusive Mauritius resort always better value, or could you save money by paying for some meals and drinks separately?

The answer depends on how you like to holiday, which resort you choose, and how much time you plan to spend enjoying its restaurants, bars and facilities.

At IslandStays, we believe the best Mauritius holiday is not necessarily the cheapest package or the one with the most inclusions. It is the one that suits the way you want to travel.

Here is our practical guide to understanding Mauritius meal plans before you book.

1. Mauritius meal plans explained: What is the difference?

Before comparing resorts, it helps to understand the three main meal plans offered by Mauritius hotels and holiday packages.

Half board (HB)

Usually includes breakfast and dinner. Drinks with meals, lunch, snacks and drinks throughout the day are generally charged separately, although individual resort policies vary.

Best for: Couples and travellers who want relaxed resort dining but enjoy exploring during the day.

Full board (FB)

Usually includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. Drinks, snacks between meals and certain speciality dining experiences may cost extra.

Best for: Families and travellers who expect to eat most of their meals at the resort.

All-inclusive (AI)

Usually includes the main meals, selected drinks and some additional food and beverage benefits. Depending on the resort, this may include snacks, afternoon tea, cocktails and selected activities.

Best for: Travellers who want greater control over their holiday spending and enjoy making the most of their resort.

Important: These are general descriptions, not guarantees. Every Mauritius resort has its own rules, and inclusions can differ between room categories, package offers and travel dates. Always check the specific terms of the quote before booking.

2. Half board in Mauritius: Is breakfast and dinner enough?

Half board is a popular choice for Mauritius holidays because it provides two substantial meals each day without requiring you to pay for an all-inclusive package.

Imagine a couple spending seven nights at a beachfront resort. They enjoy breakfast on the terrace, spend the day swimming or exploring the island, and return for dinner at the hotel.

If they enjoy a light lunch, perhaps at a café during an excursion, half board could work very well.

However, the picture changes if they spend the entire day beside the pool, ordering cold drinks, cocktails and snacks. These additional costs can accumulate quickly.

Before choosing half board, ask:

  • Are tea, coffee and juices included at breakfast?

  • Are water and other drinks included with dinner?

  • What are the typical prices of lunch, soft drinks, beer, wine and cocktails?

  • Can you dine at different restaurants within the resort, or is dinner restricted to one restaurant?

  • Are there nearby restaurants within a reasonable distance?

Half board can be excellent value for independent travellers who enjoy exploring Mauritius. However, it may be less attractive for guests who prefer to spend most of their holiday relaxing at the resort.

3. Full board in Mauritius: The middle ground

Full board adds lunch to the breakfast-and-dinner arrangement, making it a useful option for guests who plan to spend much of their holiday at the resort.

It can be particularly attractive for families with children, couples who enjoy leisurely days by the pool, or travellers who prefer not to leave the property in search of lunch.

However, full board does not automatically mean that everything is included.

For example, a resort may provide breakfast, lunch and dinner in its main restaurant, while charging separately for alcoholic drinks, premium coffees, bottled water or snacks between meals.

You may also find that à la carte restaurants have supplements, require reservations or are not included in your particular meal plan.

Our advice: Compare the cost of upgrading from half board to full board against what you would realistically spend on lunches. If the difference is small, full board could be worthwhile. If you expect to be out exploring several days, you might not use all the meals you have paid for.

4. All-inclusive Mauritius resorts: What do you really get?

All-inclusive holidays appeal to travellers who want to enjoy their resort without continually thinking about the cost of each drink or meal.

Depending on the property, an all-inclusive package may include:

  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

  • Selected alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

  • Tea, coffee and certain refreshments throughout the day.

  • Snacks, afternoon tea or light meals between main meals.

  • Access to selected resort restaurants, subject to availability and reservation rules.

  • Some non-motorised watersports or other activities.

The important word is selected.

An all-inclusive package does not necessarily include every restaurant, every cocktail, premium spirits, imported wines, room service, minibar items, spa treatments or motorised watersports. Excursions and special dining experiences may also cost extra.

Even within the same resort, different offers can have different inclusions. Some packages may include more extensive restaurant access or additional benefits than others.

Before booking, ask for the actual all-inclusive benefits applicable to your room, dates and quotation. A resort advertising itself as all-inclusive is not, by itself, a guarantee that every food, drink or activity is covered.

5. Mauritius all-inclusive vs half board: Which offers better value?

The best way to compare meal plans is to look beyond the advertised package price.

Consider this illustrative example for two adults staying seven nights. These figures are hypothetical and are intended to demonstrate the comparison, not represent current Mauritius resort prices.

Holiday cost

Half board

All-inclusive

Initial package for two

R40,000

R46,000

Lunches, drinks and snacks paid separately

R8,400

R0

Illustrative total

R48,400

R46,000

In this example, all-inclusive costs R6,000 more upfront, but the additional food and drinks consumed on the half-board plan cost R8,400. All-inclusive therefore works out R2,400 cheaper overall.

But change the couple's habits and the result could be different. If they spend their days sightseeing, eat lunch elsewhere only occasionally and drink very little alcohol, half board could be the better choice.

When comparing real Mauritius holiday packages, consider:

  • The price difference: How much extra does the all-inclusive upgrade actually cost for everyone travelling?

  • Your daily habits: Will you spend most of your time at the resort or exploring the island?

  • Drinks: Do you enjoy cocktails, wine, beer and soft drinks throughout the day?

  • Dining preferences: Are you happy eating at the main restaurant, or do you prefer independent restaurants?

  • Family needs: Will children want frequent snacks, ice creams and drinks?

  • What's excluded: Could restaurant supplements, premium beverages or other extras add significantly to the bill?

The aim is not to choose the meal plan with the longest inclusion list. It is to identify which option offers the best overall value for your particular holiday.

6. Resort restaurants: Don't assume every meal plan works the same way

Two Mauritius resorts offering all-inclusive accommodation may deliver quite different dining experiences.

One might include selected meals at several restaurants, while another might limit certain benefits to its main buffet restaurant. À la carte dining could require advance reservations, and some restaurants may carry a surcharge.

This matters if food is a major part of your holiday experience.

If you love trying different cuisines and dining in beautiful settings, ask how many restaurants are accessible under the quoted meal plan. If you are travelling with children, check restaurant opening times, children's menus and whether early dinners are practical.

Also check whether unused meals can be exchanged for lunch boxes on excursion days. Never assume this is permitted; it depends on the resort's policy.

The right resort is about more than its star rating, beach or room category. Dining arrangements can make a real difference to how much you enjoy your stay.

7. When is upgrading to all-inclusive worth it?

All-inclusive is often worth considering when:

  • You want a relaxed beach holiday. You expect to spend most days swimming, sunbathing and enjoying the resort.

  • You enjoy drinks and refreshments. You would otherwise pay separately for drinks throughout the day.

  • You are travelling as a family. Predictable food and beverage costs can make budgeting easier, particularly with children.

  • You are celebrating a special occasion. For an anniversary or romantic getaway, knowing more of your costs upfront can make the experience more carefree.

  • You prefer to settle most expenses before departure. This can be particularly helpful when comparing the total cost of a Mauritius holiday from South Africa.

Half board may be preferable if you enjoy discovering local restaurants, taking excursions or spending several days away from your hotel.

Full board can suit travellers who want all three main meals included but do not expect to make extensive use of the resort's drinks and snack offerings.

There is no universal winner. Your preferred holiday style should guide the decision.

8. Five questions to ask before accepting your Mauritius holiday quote

Before choosing a package, make sure you understand exactly what you are paying for.

  1. Which meals are included? Confirm breakfast, lunch and dinner arrangements, including any restrictions.

  2. Which drinks are included? Ask about water, soft drinks, tea, coffee, wine, beer, cocktails and premium beverages.

  3. Can we use the resort's different restaurants? Check restaurant access, supplements, reservation requirements and exclusions.

  4. What happens between meals? Find out whether snacks, ice cream, afternoon tea and minibar items are included.

  5. What else will we pay for? Check excursions, spa treatments, motorised watersports, special dining experiences and any other extras relevant to your stay.

These questions help you compare Mauritius holiday packages on a like-for-like basis rather than judging them by the headline price alone.

Make the right choice for your Mauritius holiday

The best meal plan is the one that fits your budget, eating habits and holiday priorities. Half board can offer excellent value for travellers who like exploring, full board provides convenience for guests who eat most meals at their resort, and all-inclusive can be an attractive option for those who want to relax with fewer additional expenses to consider.

The resort itself matters just as much. A wonderful all-inclusive package at the wrong resort will not necessarily deliver the holiday you imagined.
